The Returned 2013
Immortality, Take it it's yours!" Hands up for zombie films!
I know, right? Greats like the remake of Dawn of the Dead, George Romero's Living Dead legacy & even AMC The Walking Dead Tv Series that started getting really good from season 3. Prior to that it was people talking & sometimes some zombies show up. Zombies are that fiction that just seems create a infinite amount of storylines with a basic premise. Let's hope nothing comes around they way Twilight did for the Vampire Genre. Nice to see a fresh take on the zombie pop-culture genre. Not since the film Warm Bodies which stars the boy from About a Boy, have a seen a refreshingly different side to the constant swarming of gnashing teeth and rotted Peter Garrett Dancers. |
The Returned is kind of the opposite of World War Z. You won't see hoards of zombies swarming & forming dog piles on buildings and you won't hear tag lines like "Immortality, Take it it's yours!"
Instead we have the storyline centred around a couple. A doctor, Kate, who works directly within the Returned Ward & boyfriend Alex who is a musician.
Set in a world where the infected live amongst the living by a vaccine that must be administered daily in order to keep from turning.
The twist is that the vaccination supplies are running low & the ticking time bombs walk around as the Returned. |
The film is more of a thriller with audience understanding the plight of difficult decisions and choices.
How would you feel if you knew people with an ailment for infection are walking amongst you, the people you know & your family? There is an underlying social commentary on how we treat people & how Governments & Law enforcement are with viral containment. For fans of the genre it is worth the watch to gather round the water cooler and have a convo with that one other guy from work that shares the same cult lust as yourself.
For others it would be a psychological horror to view the impact of needing a constant serum to stay alive on the couple & their love life. I give this diamond in the rough 6.9 chin wags out of 10. Also enjoy a track by Metric that i'm pretty sure is about Zombies. |
